Kathryn Minx, Retired COO, Behavioral Health, Humana
How did you become an executive in the health care industry? Did you always have an interest in health care?
I started my career in public accounting and was exposed to many industries. I worked on the Eli Lilly account and was hooked on the work done in the healthcare segment. What a wonderful way to develop a career and help others at the same time!
What is one major challenge you see facing the health care industry today?
I think the biggest challenge in healthcare right now is finding a way to deliver high quality, low cost care for all Americans. There are many experiments going on with value-based care, population health, and integration of providers into hospitals and healthcare payers. We have yet to figure out the right mix.
What does true leadership mean to you?
True leadership means creating a compelling vision and then hiring/coaching/motivating the team to accomplish the vision. True leaders then: 1) trust that the team can get it done; 2) remove any barriers for the team; and 3) get out of the way.
Name one recent accomplishment you are proud of.
One recent accomplishment was serving as COO for Humana Behavioral Health. We won the TRICARE contract to provide integrated behavioral health services to serve 6 million veterans and families.
Outside of the WBL Summit, what are some ways in which you take advantage of your WBL Membership?
I have attended several Summits and met many wonderful women. I also participated in a 2 day conference to prepare women to serve on public and non-profit boards [www.wblboardprogram.org]. The conference was very well done and helped me understand what is required for Board leadership and how important it is for women to step up to serve.
Personally or professionally, what might the WBL network be surprised to know about you?
Professionally, I have been offered a variety of opportunities such as launching a pet health insurance company with Mars, Inc; serving as COO of an architecture firm; and CFO of several businesses. I have loved the variety and learned so much. Personally, we have lived in 22 different homes - that is a lot of moving!
